In southern Mexico there was a strong earthquake of 8.1 points destroyed a home in the state of Chiapas, which led to at least five dead and tsunami.
The earthquake was so strong that it caused intense excitement in the capital of Mexico at a distance of over 1000 kilometers. Residents ran out of buildings, many were in night clothes, gathered in groups on the street. Some neighborhoods remained in the dark after a power outage.
"The house began to move like a chewing gum, and the lights and Internet went down", - said Rodrigo Soberanes, who lives near San Cristobal de Las Casas in Chiapas, in the popular tourist area.
Damage was caused to the hospitals that remained without power. Homes, schools and hospitals were damaged.
According to the Governor of Tabasco, Arturo Nunez, in his state killed two children. One of them died when the wall fell, and the other died in the hospital, which was left without electricity, with the result that disconnected the compressor for the baby.
Geological survey reported that the quake was recorded at 11:49 PM local time Thursday, and its epicenter was located 165 kilometers West of Tapachula in Chiapas, near Guatemala. The epicenter was located at a depth of 69.7 km.
In neighboring Guatemala, President Jimmy Morales went on national television to call for calm while the emergency services checked the presence of damage.
Lucy Jones, a seismologist from California, who works with the USGS, said that such an earthquake was to be expected.
"Off the West coast of Mexico is the so-called subduction zone, the Pacific plate is moving under the Mexican Peninsula," she said. "And so it is often a great earthquake."
